We buy make-up to enhance our natural beauty, but did you know that most makeup is full of ugly chemicals? I'm talking about plastics that cover your face, irritate your skin. and are packaged in containers that can't be recycled. Yuck!

PLASTIC Makeup

For example, lets look at NUDESTIX blush. It sounds natural, safe, and sustainable. But is it? Here is the ingredient list. Bold items are plastic.

  • Diisostearyl Malate
  • Dimethicone
  • Polybutene
  • Caprylyl Methicone
  • Synthetic Wax
  • Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer
  • Silica
  • Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer
  • Polyethylene
  • Bis-Diglycerylpolyacyladipate-2
  • Kaolin
  • Dimethicone
  • Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate
  • C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate
  • Mica
  • Tocopheryl Acetate
  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Caprylyl Glycol
  • Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate:
  • Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
  • Iron Oxides (Ci77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)
  • Red 7 (CI 15850)

Eight out of the twenty-two ingredients are plastic. These ingredients cover your pores, get rinsed down the drain, and contribute to micro-plastics in our waterways. One of the plastics, polyethylene, may even be carcinogenic and have toxic effects on your immune system. So not only is this product bad for the planet, it's bad for your body too!

PLASTIC-FREE Makeup

Luckily, I found a makeup company that cares about your skin and the planet. Meet River Organics. They use vegan, organic, and natural ingredients. Their containers are paper tubes with sugar cane labels that can be composted. Here is the ingredient list for their Bloom Blush:

  • Organic Sunflower Seed Oil
  • Organic Safflower Seed Oil
  • Candelilla Wax
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Silica
  • Zinc Oxide
  • Arrowroot Powder
  • Mica

There is absolutely no plastic on this list! Better yet, everything is completely natural and safe for your skin! That means it's good for your body and the planet!
